Course Overview

The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 was developed to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for everyone in a company. It is the single most important Act governing health & safety in the country and applies to all work and places of work. 500 people are killed, 30,000 people are seriously injured and 30 million days are lost per year due to work – related injuries. The focus of this Virtual College course  is to raise awareness of the potential hazards and what measures can be used to minimise the number of work related accidents within an engineering environment.

Health and Safety rules and regulations are also very important and this course will help the learner to have a greater knowledge of these regulations and how to comply with them. Having completed the module the learner will have a better understanding of health and safety regulations, how to recognise potential hazards, the application of safe working practices and procedures and how to react in the event of an emergency.

The learning objectives for this module encompass Complying with health and safety regulations

  • Describe and apply in principle your duties and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and relevant current legislation
  • Identify within the organisation the sources of information and guidance on health and safety issues such as eye protection, personal protective equipment, COSHH regulations and risk assessment
  • Identify the warning signs and labels of the main groups of hazardous or dangerous substance
  • Comply with the appropriate statutory regulations

Following accident and emergency procedures

  • Identify the location of first aid facilities
  • Identify the appropriate qualified first aiders
  • Identify procedures to follow for injury to self or others
  • Follow organisational procedures in the event of fire
  • Follow organisational procedures for the evacuation of premises
  • Identify procedures to be followed in the event of dangerous occurrences or hazardous malfunctions of equipment, processes or machinery

Applying safe working practices and procedure

  • Use equipment safely and only for the purpose intended
  • Observe organisational safety rules, signs and hazard warnings
  • Take measures to protect others from harm by any work you are carrying out
  • Act in a responsible manner at all times within the working environment
  • Carry out your work activities in accordance with legal requirements and organisational safety policies
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Observe personal hygiene procedures
  • Demonstrate how to lift alone
  • Demonstrate how to lift with the assistance of others
  • Demonstrate how to lift with mechanical assistance

Recognising and controlling hazards in the workplace

  • Recognise hazards in your working environment (such as working at height, in confined space and hot work)
  • Recognise hazards with the equipment that you use (such as machines, power tools and cutting tools)
  • Recognise hazards with the materials and substances, where appropriate, that you use (such as cutting fluids/oils, hydraulic fluids and fluxes)
